Lackawanna Fire 5000

            Union Fire Company “Running Team” took part in the 2ND annual Lackawanna Fire 5000, sponsored by City of Lackawanna Fire Fighters, Local 3166, on Friday September 02, 2011. Participants in the event from Union included Chief Jeff Warner, Firefighters, Aaron Cassick and Shawn Mulvaney.

            The Lackawanna Fire 5000 is a USA Track and Field certified 5K which was held at Holy Cross Cemetery, South Park Avenue in Lackawanna. Over 300 participants were expected for the race that started at 6:30 PM. The race is a benefit to raise money for the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Burn Foundation. Founded in 1982, the IAFF Burn Foundation is dedicated to burn prevention and education, burn research and improving the quality of life for burn survivors.

            Burns are one of the most horrific assaults that can be inflicted on the human body. As professional fire fighters, the IAFF and its 297,000 members understand this fact better than most. The IAFF Burn Foundation recognizes the tremendous need to assist the more than 2.5 million people, including fire fighters and emergency responders, who are burned each year.

            Firefighters from West Seneca departments; Reserve and Seneca Hose also partook in the race as well, Unions’ contingent would capture a 3RD Place finish in this years race. Father Joseph Bayne, Chaplain of Erie County Emergency services was Master of Ceremonies, Union firefighters Larry Tworek, Rich Miller, and Andy Mocny, also members of Unions running team that has participated in other runs this year, were unable to attend this latest run.
