Water Rescue Team Summoned in Evans Search

Union Fire Company, as part of the West Seneca Water Rescue Team, was summoned to Evans, outside Angola, on Friday March 25, 2011 at request of Erie County Sheriffs and other fire departments to aide in the search for 18-year-old Angel Marie Leverenz, whom has not been seen since March 22.

Evans Police say they have found some of Leverenz's personal belongings, including her purse and other personal effects, while searching a stretch of 18-mile Creek.

A task force of close to 150 police, firefighters, and volunteers has been concentrating the search for Leverenz along 18-mile Creek from where Leverenz's car was found on Thursday on South Creek Road, all the way to Lake Erie. Leverenz's car was unlocked with her car keys and ID still inside.

Evans Police Capt. Charles Danzi said, "We're concentrating the search now along the creek bed. We did discover some personal items in the area, right along the shore of the creekline. We're going to concentrate our efforts more towards the creekline."

Investigators are still treating this as a missing person's case with Evans Police in the lead, assisted by State Police, Erie County Sheriff's Air One, Niagara County Sheriff's K-9 team, and Forest Rangers.

"It's very tough terrain. Many cliffs, holes, just very tough terrain to manuveur," said Capt. Danzi.

Crews from the West Seneca Water Rescue contigent responded to the North Evans Fire Hall on Friday then deployed to locations along 18-mile Creek.  Authorities said more than 40 volunteer firemen were searching a six-mile radius around where the vehicle was found. They said it is a rough and dangerous terrain, especially for someone who doesn't know the area.

Crews ended their search Friday night around 7 p.m. and units returned into service. Erie County Sheriffs representatives said the search for Leverenz will resume Saturday morning, beginning at 7:30 a.m.
