Cooking Listed as Cause of Smoldering Fire

Cooking on the stove is listed as cause of a smoldering fire at a residence on Wilson Street July 31, 2009 in the eastern portion of Unions jurisdiction. The residents children admitted that a fire erupted on the stove when cooking, the children believed the fire was out, however the female resident discovered smoke coming from the roof area when she arrived home.

Union, East Seneca, and Vigilant Fire Companies responded to find the fire had extended to above the stove into the attic area and continued to smolder. Crews from the 3-departments searched extensively for the hidden fire, forced to tear out wall sections to access for extension.
